An Irradiation Effect in Nova DN Gem 1912 and the Significance of the Period Gap for Classical Novae
نویسندگان
چکیده
Continuous CCD photometry of the classical nova DN Gem during 52 nights in the years 1992-98 reveals a modulation with a period 0.127844 d. The semi-amplitude is about 0.03 mag. The stability of the variation suggests that it is the orbital period of the binary system. This interpretation makes DN Gem the fourth nova inside the cataclysmic variable (CV) period gap, as defined by Diaz & Bruch (1997), and it bolsters the idea that there is no period gap for classical novae. However, the number of known nova periods is still too small to establish this idea statistically. We eliminate several possible mechanisms for the variation, and propose that the modulation is driven by an irradiation effect. We find that model light curves of an irradiated secondary star, fit the data well. The inclination angle of the system is restricted by this model to 10◦ < ∼ i ∼ 65 ◦. We also refine a previous estimate of the distance to the binary system, and find d=1.6±0.6 kpc.

The decline in irradiation from the white dwarf in old novae
Aims. We have investigated how a flux ratio analysis of the light curves of cataclysmic variables can be used to calculate the luminosity irradiating the secondary star in the classical novae QU Vul, V Per, DD Cir, DN Gem, V1432 Aql, and WY Sge. Methods. We undertook phase-resolved, near-infrared K band photometry of QU Vul and V Per. Using data from QU Vul we show how flux ratios taken between...
متن کاملMeasuring White Dwarf Accretion Rates via Their Effective Temperatures
Our previous theoretical study of the impact of an accreting envelope on the thermal state of an underlying white dwarf (WD) has yielded equilibrium core temperatures, classical nova ignition masses and thermal luminosities for WDs accreting at time averaged rates of 〈Ṁ〉 = 10−11 −10M⊙ yr−1. These 〈Ṁ〉’s are appropriate to WDs in cataclysmic variables (CVs) of Porb . 7 hr, many of which accrete s...
متن کاملSgr and searching for superhumps in nova remnants
Aims. We present the period analysis of unfiltered photometric observations of V5116 Sgr (Nova Sgr 2005 #2) and we search for superhump candidates in novae remnants. Methods. The PDM method for period analysis is used. The masses of the novae componets are estimated from the secondary mass – orbital period and primary mass – decline time relations. Results. We found that 13 nights of V5116 Sgr ...
متن کاملIdea of Gravitational Lensing
Einstein’s early calculations of gravitational lensing, contained in a scratch notebook and dated to the spring of 1912, are reexamined. A hitherto unknown letter by Einstein suggests that he entertained the idea of explaining the phenomenon of new stars by gravitational lensing in the fall of 1915 much more seriously than was previously assumed. A reexamination of the relevant calculations by ...
متن کاملRecurrent Novae , Classical Novae , Symbiotic Novae , and Population II
Light curve analysis of decay phase of nova outburst are summarized. Nova duration is determined by the strong wind mass-loss which depends only on the white dwarf mass. Fast novae correspond very massive white dwarfs and very slow novae correspond almost lower mass limit of white dwarfs. This relation is shown in both of classical novae and recurrent novae. Light curves are theoretically repro...
